A Saving Grace

My devout colleague, who was deeply submerged in a cult, severed the ties of our friendship. It disturbed me that such a bright and intelligent girl with a heart of gold could have gotten wrapped up in a company called, Vemma is a multi-level marketing company who’s mission is to spread health and wellness to all by selling overpriced nutritious shakes and recruiting others to do the same. She quoted statements about the products she claimed to sell but when I challenged her to provide me with facts about the products she would extend her hand and ask me to try a sample and simply feel the difference in my body. Since the day she began in the company, we never had normal conversations. They would always cater to how awesome Vemma was and how much money she was making. She began neglecting her full-time job and falling behind in all her bills. She insisted that I trust her belief that she is just about to hit a home run in the company and soon she would be dripping with money. Not only did her full time job suffer, but all of her relationships with her family. She began to isolate herself with only her “Vemma family” and only listening to her “upline”. I was desperate in getting my friend out and I knew I couldn’t do it alone. After much contemplating I knew I would have to find someone with a plan in saving my dear friend. It was about 3 years ago when I tuned into the O’Reilly Factor on Fox News and listened to the interview with Steven Hassan, the nation’s leading expert in cults. The information that I gathered seemed to fit snug with the brainwashing I observed in Vemma. I researched Hassan’s credentials and discovered that he is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as a Nationally Certified Counselor. I purchased a copy of “Combatting Cult Mind Control: The #1 Best-selling Guide to Protection, Rescue, and Recovery from Destructive Cults” a book he wrote that came out in 1998. Reading just a few pages in, I knew that Steven Hassan, a former  cult member of The Moonies, was the man I wanted to contact in helping save my friend. 

Steven Hassan is an amazing man. He is intelligent, patient and I gotta say brave to have successfully helped not only my friend but hundreds and hundreds of men and women around the globe who were starving for hope and freedom.
